As of 2011, US Congressional District 5 contains all of St. Mary's, Charles, and Calvert Counties and contains parts of Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties.

Maryland has eight Circuit Court Districts. 

  • Circuit 1: Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, Worcester
  • Circuit 2: Cecil, Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot
  • Circuit 3: Baltimore County, Harford
  • Circuit 4: Allegany, Garrett, Washington
  • Circuit 5: Anne Arundel, Howard, Carroll
  • Circuit 6: Frederick, Montgomery
  • Circuit 7: Calvert, Charles, Prince George's, St. Mary's
  • Circuit 8: Baltimore City

Circuit Court Judges are elected on a per-county basis.

Maryland has seven Appellate Court Districts, based on county lines. Citizens vote to confirm appellate judges from their districts and any at-large judges.

  • Circuit 1: Cecil, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, Worcester
  • Circuit 2: Baltimore County, Harford
  • Circuit 3: Allegany, Garrett, Frederick, Carroll, Howard, Washington
  • Circuit 4: Prince George's
  • Circuit 5: Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's
  • Circuit 6: Baltimore City
  • Circuit 7: Montgomery

Each of the seven districts sends one judge to be on the Court of Appeals, which is the highest court in the State (commonly called the Supreme Court in other states and at the federal level), and one judge to be on the Court of Special Appeals. There are also six judges elected at-large to the Court of Special Appeals.

The appellate courts review a trial court’s (District or Circuit Court) actions and decisions in given cases and decide whether the trial judge properly followed the law and legal precedent.

Maryland has 47 Legislative Districts. Each has one State Senator and three State Delegates, who create legislation in Annapolis. Many districts elect three delegates; other districts are divided into two or three subdistricts (A, B, C) and elect either one or two delegates.
