    Greetings from your LWV President,

New to the position and, yes, scared so I put out the “All Hands on Deck…” (page 7) request as a personal plea from me to you to get more active on our local front on issues and to help us to increase our membership numbers. How else can we continue the outstanding track record of outgoing president Kathy Riley and her Board? The list of accomplishments this past year, and, in fact over the 40 years of LWVCC existence, is impressive to say the least. We need to continue this tradition of focusing on issues, being non-partisan and professional, and getting results. So our celebration of “Going Strong at 40” continues well into the 2009-’10 year with your help.

Thanks also to Roberta Safer for representing LWVCC on the State Board (Annette Funn is replacing her, so we continue in good hands) and doing such a bang-up job with the recent Golden Gala honoring Leaguers with 50 or more years of experience–including our own Elaine Dunkle who was in on the forming of the Calvert League some forty years ago. And she is still active at age 94. (See pages 8-9.)

I look forward to meeting each one of you at the Summer Social (page 15) to be held at Dawn Balinski’s lovely home on St. Leonard Creek on July 18. Please bring at least one prospective member to this event and meet our newest members to the Board, Debbie Harris and Norma Imershein, as well as our continuing Board members Barbara Fetterhoff, Dawn Balinski, Roberta Safer, Kathy Riley, Fran Poling, Annette Funn, Sharron Bickel, and Christa Conant.

We have a number of studies continuing in Calvert County that welcome committed committee members: The Greening of Calvert County led by Dawn Balinski; Town Centers led by Bob Poling; and Transportation led by Kathy Riley. We’ll be celebrating our 8th Annual Women of the World (WOW) Luncheon and Awards in March focusing on “Sisters on the Planet,” and holding possibly two Forums – the first on “Bullying” on September 29 and perhaps a Forum on “Water” in Spring 2010.

I would love to form a committee that monitors the Board of County Commissioner and the Board of Education meetings on a regular basis. Interested? Let us see you at our meetings.

    Get involved!

    Anne Mychalus, President
